My dog barks at an empty staircase. What's the rational reason?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 5 days old | 40 lbs

I feel stupid to ask this question. But I really need help. My dog barks at my staircase. We live in 1st floor. When I take him out he stops before the stair & barks. And when we return he comes to that exact spot and barks. He just wouldn't come even if I show him a treat. He sniffs around that place & barks again at an empty space. Just plain empty space. There's nothing there. I read in Google that dogs could react to spirits like that. Do u have any rational explanation for this?

There are certainly some people who feel dogs are more sensitive to supernatural entities. We have no scientific evidence of this, so I cannot speak to this possibility. A scientific explanation would be that your dog has an incredible sense of smell and there could be a smell in that area that your dog detects and reacts to, but you cannot smell because you don't have the incredible sense of smell that your dog possesses.
