My dog growled moving from bed to crate. Can he be crate trained?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 13 lbs

He’s been crate trained since he was a pup & he loves his crate. He’ll go in there just to nap but he’ll also sleep on my bed when I’m not home. Recently I’ve let him sleep with me for a few nights, & tonight I tried putting him back into his crate & he was reluctant. Last night I also tried to to take him off the bed and back into his crate & he growled at me. Is there a way for him to be crate trained while still being able to sleep with him sometimes?

My concern is more that he growled at you when you tried to get him off the bed. Some dogs begin to feel they are our equals when they are on our level, such as on the couch or in the bed. If he is becoming “bossy” or obstinate, then I would recommend keeping him off the bed. Also, if you need to get him off the bed then entice with a treat, or have a leash on. Do not grab or pull his collar as the growl may escalate to a bite. If the crate worked well then I recommend going back to it. Good luck, and thanks for using Pet Coach.
