Feral cat population control: Spay females, neuter males, or both?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

We are caretakers of a feral colony. What is best as far as controlling the population (on a very small budget) - spaying all the females and leaving the males be, or just the males, or do i need to do both?

The males are usually less expensive to have surgery than the females. For health reasons other than population control getting them all done would be best. A female cat in heat is annoying and can attract other males in the surrounding areas to come. Not getting the males fixed will create a territory problem and increase fighting. I would ask your local vets if they have any assistance or know if any local programs that can help provide these services at a reduced rate since you have a large volume of cats
