My 10-year-old Pomeranian has rising liver enzymes and hepatitis. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

My 10 year old pomeranian started panting and excessive thirst appointment 2 months ago. 3 weeks ago took him to the vet, they checkled him for cushing disease. They say he doesn't have that. From the blood work drawn they say his liver enzymes are in the 2000 range. So we had an Ultrasound performed. The ultrasound looked good and they diagnosed him with hepatitis. Was sent home with 2 antibiotics for 10 days, returned for bloodwork, liver enzymes elevated even higher. What should we do

The next logical step is liver biopsy. Please, discuss it with your vet. If they are not able to take a biopsy (not every veterinary practice is capable to perform this procedure) you should ask to be referred to specialists in internal medicine. They will be able to offer much wider range of investigation and treatment.
