How can I help my hen with a painful leg injury and heavy breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 4 lbs

My hen has a knee injury. Whenever I move her knee she pulls it back like it hurts and she limps. She's also sitting down and breathing heavily. I gave her a baby aspirin and she eats and drinks. What do I do about the pain from her knee and what could it be? Is she panting from the pain and if so what do I do? Thanks

The aspirin can be used for a maximum of three days. Restrict her activity. Separate her from the flock if necessary. The increased respiration may be from pain or infection. If the lameness persists or worsens then have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating domestic fowl. Make sure she continues to eat and drink. Provide supplemental heat and keep her as stress free as possible until she sees the vet.
