My 10 year old Bassett Hound keeps licking the top of her front paws. Im afraid she will get a hot spot. How can I make her stop it?

Hello. If this is a new behavior, you might want to have your vet check things out to make sure there is no underlying problems. A nail/skin infection, allergies, even arthritis can cause a dog to lick the paws. There are some no lick products that you can apply that will deter the licking, but it is always best to try & find the cause, especially in an older dog like Abbey. My guess is this is how she is responding to some arthritis in her front feet, a common problem in a breed like a Bassett. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I hope all is well with Abbey Rose.
