My dog fell. Why is he licking his stomach and lifting his head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My dog fell as he was jumping up on my dog (as he does every night). He wouldn't move after he fell down and so I put him up on my bed. He walked over to his spot to lay down and he looked ok. Now he keeps licking his stomach and lifting his head up in the air. This has been going on for almost an hour and he won't stop the head thing. Any ideas on what this means? His breathing seems to be a little faster too

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Smokey! It's unclear as to what the licking may mean and the head in the air behavior without examining Smokey first, but it may indicate he is experiencing some discomfort or pain from the fall. He may have hurt his neck or back in some way. I would have Smokey examined by his veterinarian tomorrow to make sure he is ok. If he worsens tonight, you may want to take Smokey into an emergency veterinary clinic. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Smokey!
