Should I breed my dog with keratitis? Is it inherited by puppies?

Dear, what is a possibility of carrying on Keratits on offsprings? Our dog has it but we don't know the trigger. We sould like to breed her but we are concerned about this problem. Thank you for your time

It is believed that there could be a genetic component to keratitis, but there has been no proven genetic basis to date. Breeding is not recommended for any dog who has keratitis associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). KCS is a condition known as dry eye. Because there hasn't been a proven genetic basis to keratitis, I can't say the possibility of Asa giving it to her puppies, but it's best not to breed a dog who has a condition that is suspected to be inherited. It sounds like your dog has had a complete ocular workup, and the treatments appear appropriate for the diagnostic findings. I agree that the problem may be autoimmune or genetic. There are also a few viral or infections caused by tick-borne disease that could cause chronic keratitis in dogs. I would recommend discussing this with your veterinarian. Often dogs will need long-term use of steroids or other immune-altering drugs to control immune-mediated disease.

Since there is a lot we don't know about auto-immune disorders, and how they are related to one another, we ideally would not be breeding any dogs with any form of auto-immune diseases. Yes to my previous question he had conjunctivitis sicca on 4 th may 2019 and we take him to vet after 10 days when it was getting worse so vet given him moxicip and tear drops 4 time a day now course is done but still it is this scarring is there so
Any scarring on the cornea will cause changes to the vision. Pets with this condition can also get pigmentation of the cornea which will also cause blind spots. KCS is generally a chronic and requires daily treatment with an immune suppressant eye drop like cyclosporin and an artificial tear. Pets with KCS will be more prone to infections and will have a harder time healing injuries. Any ongoing infection or untreated injuries can lead to blindness and pain. I hope this helps.

It depends on the trigger - in some cases if the underlying condition such as lack of tear production or ingrowing eyelashes can be addressed then the condition will often resolve but in other cases it is slowly progressive but can be reduced by ongoing management. A repeat exam, serial photographs of the eye to compare and a tear test would be recommended after treatment and again one month later

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Keratitis is basically inflammation of the cornea. In most cases it improves with just topical medications (eye drops). I recommend that you continue the course prescribed by your veterinarian for now. It is likely that he will get better. Good luck and have a good day!

If the allergic condition is improving, you should continue with the same protocol as prescribed by your veterinarian. You may also want to consider a food elimation trial because if Bonnie is allergic to environmental factors she may also have food allergies. If the condition recurs or worsens, medications such as steroids, Atopica or Cytopoint may be considered. As for breeding, allergic individuals are more likely to give birth to puppies who have the same ailment.

She may be sensitive to bright light since the iris will likely not be able to respond normally by constricting. There is no treatment or cure for the condition and vision is typically only minimally affected. Since it is a genetic condition, she should not be used for breeding when she is older.

While this could be pigmentary keratitis I am concerned that it looks like the pigment may be inside the eye which would mean that an iris cyst or mass would be more likely. I’d recommend having your vet take a look in person. If it is pigmentary keratitis then your vet would look for things that could cause inflammation or irritation of the cornea like dry eye, abnormal eyelashes or an inability to fully close the eye.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! An overbite or underbite is genetic and can be passed to future offspring. It is usually not recommended to breed these pets since this is not a desired trait and does not improve the breeding lineage. That being said, most people will still use these pets as breeders despite the malocclusion. The bite can cause abnormal wear on the enamel of the teeth or chewing problems depending on how severe. Also, some genetic problems don’t show up until a pet is older (like hip dysplasia). The decision is still yours whether or not you want to use her for breeding. Kisses to Abby!

I am a bit confused about why your veterinarian did not examine your dog before the vaccinations and also did not examine the eyes and why it was a nurse who did this. Keratitis sicca (if it was diagnosed by your veterinarian) is a common eye disease of certain breed dogs and can occur at any time in their life. It is impossible to say whether this was a sequel to the vaccinations, but since Charlie obviously had an eye problem when he went to have his injections, it is unlikely. The eye drops for Keratitis sicca are expensive. I would get a second opinion from a veterinary ophthalmologist to verify the diagnosis, as with Keratitis sicca Charlie will need those eye drops for the rest of his life.
