Why is my dog lethargic, weak, stiff, and can't lift his head?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 90 lbs

My dog is lethargic, very weak, body is stiff and is having trouble picking himself/head up. No vomiting or diarrhea. He is drinking/eating peeing/pooping fine. Has a boogery nose and is drooling a bit. Dog is 4 years old. Recent visit to the doc blood work showed high globulin and high formation of new red blood cells. They gave him antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. I will be taking him back but want a second opnion on what this might be before my vet goes on a wild goose chance and my bill

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach this afternoon. It is very hard to say what the cause of Rajah's symptoms may be without examining Rajah and running current blood work on him first. The high globulin means there is an inflammatory process occurring in the body. The high amount of immature or new red blood cells means he is using up red blood cells faster than he can supply them. This may indicate a bleed somewhere internally or may also indicate a cancerous process occurring or a severe infection. Rajah's current symptoms are concerning and should be treated very soon with your veterinarian. Sooner rather than later would be better. I would recommend in addition to blood work, an x-ray, or abdominal ultrasound to look for a tumor or free fluid in the abdomen. I hope this helps and I wish you and Rajah the best of luck.
