My cat gave birth to stillborn kittens. How do I care for her now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

My cat had these two kittens yesterday morning but I think she miscarried them. They weren’t breathing and she refused to go to the first kitten but stayed with the second one. She’s been clingy and hasn’t been eating like she usually does. Her whole backside fur is still matted from when she was cleaning it and she smells still. She doesn’t want to leave my side. How do I help her with her milk or anything. Did I do something wrong? Were the kittens still alive?

The kittens appear to still be in their individual amniotic sacs. An inexperienced or first time mother may not know to remove them from the sac. They may have been stillborn or could have died shortly after birth. Have Azula examined by your veterinarian to confirm no more kittens remain inside. Her milk will not come in or will dry up without kittens to nurse. You can bathe her or use pet wipes or unscented baby wipes to clean her up. Consider having her spayed in a few weeks to prevent a recurrence or accidental/unwanted litters in the future.
