My dog has spreading scabs he's gnawing. Is it mange or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 46 lbs

When we got my dog he seemed to have scabs on. About 1/8th of his body that were spread out. Recently I have been noticing more and I am not sure if I just didn't see them the first time. I'm worried because he is gnawing at them. He dosent seem to be itchy but I'm worried that they won't heal or worse, its mange or a skin infection.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the photos you provided, I would suspect a skin infection, either bacterial, fungal or parasitic. I would suggest having a veterinarian examined him so that further tests can be performed in order to determine what the exact cause of these scabs is. Flint may need to be on a course of antibiotics or anti-parasitic medications to treat this. However, treatment would be based on test results and physical examination findings. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed
