My dog's coughing for weeks with green snot. Is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 85 lbs

Dog kept licking his nose and I wiped it. The tissue has greenish/yellow snot on it. He’s also been dry coughing for about 3 weeks. We took him to the vet (for cough only at the time) and she didn’t believe it was kennel cough. We did board him (after all necessary shots) at the end of August. He didn’t develop this cough until 2 weeks or so later. Now the Nose tonight. I worry for him but also myself (I’m 32 weeks pregnant) and my 2 year old catching something from him too.

It sounds like a respiratory infection, it could be kennel cough or a similar type of infection. you should take him back to the vet in order to start him on an antibiotic course ASAP. you shouldn't be worried regarding catching an infection from him though, it is very rare for a human to catch a respiratory infection from a dog, they do not tend to get those infection from viruses/bacterias that affect humans.
