Why was my 70lb dog charged for so much fentanyl at the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 6 years and 6 months old | 70 lbs

My dog was in an animal hospital that we have never been to before and was on fentanyl 0.05mg/ml injection and he weighs 70 pounds and was charged for 50 of them per day. Is it possible he was on that much?

Yes, it's definitely possible. Fentanyl is a short-acting pain medication that is often dosed every hour or as a continuous infusion. Also, a loading dose (a bigger dose) is usually given at the start to control the pain quickly. He could have easily received 5mls of this initially, then 2-3mls (possibly more) per hour. I would assume that they had him on a 24 hour continuous infusion and that's why it ended up being 50/day. It doesn't hurt to ask them though. It's always possible a mistake was made. I hope that helps and Moose gets well soon.
