Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 8 years and 2 months old
My dog is 7 years old and in the past year or so has noticeably gained weight. She's still very active and acts like a puppy, but her middle is just getting thicker. She's around 70-75lbs now and I think she should be around 60. She's a Shepherd mix....maybe Collie or Husky? (I adoped her at 3 months) She's never had a weight problem before. I'm here because I'm so overwhelmed by all the food choices and conflicting grading of them. Can you please recommend weight loss dry food for her?

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! I have had great luck with using Natural Balance Fat Dog formula as well as Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight. I would remove all treats and only use her food as a treat instead. If she is not losing weight on either of these foods within 2-3 months, I would talk to your veterinarian to discuss other options such as thyroid testing and prescription weight loss food. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I would consider a light formula food such as science diet light or healthy mobility or Iams or Royal canin. I’ll give you links to a couple options. One other thing to consider is having bloodwork done if she is gaining weight despite being active. Dogs can be hypothyroid which can cause weight gain. A senior blood panel could help assess if there is a medical reason for her weight gain. http://www.hillspet.com/en/us/products/sd-canine-adult-light-dry http://www.iams.com/dog-food/proactive-health-weight-control Thank you for using PetCoach.
