Why is my hamster always sleeping and not active during the day?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed

She always sleeping or out of sight . I rarely see her out and when I do it’s been early in the mornings or I’ll hear her on her wheel a few minutes at night.. she lives in a 40 gallon breeder tank that’s got great venalation and chew toys, treats, sand bath, etc everything she could ever want!. Any idea why she isn’t very active? Any way I can help her to be more active?

Typically hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they are more active during the night than the day time. So this behavior is completely normal for Arwen. She may also be more active when you are not around so it may be hard to judge her activity level. It sounds like you have a perfect environment for her to live in with a lot of room and toys to keep her entertained. I wouldn’t be worried about her nocturnal behavior at this point. If she stops eating or her poop changes then you may want to take her in to be checked out by the vet. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck!
