My dog has fleas, and I've tried everything. What else can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 36 lbs

I have a flea problem. I was ill, had 3 surgeries in August, unable to treat yard for fleas as I always do. Now, fleas are inside too. Our cocker spaniel (age 11, 36 lbs) suffers a lot. Normally, I would bathe him every 3-4 wks in anti-flea shampoo. Now, I applied Advantix (to no avail), bathe him every 5 days, treat beds daily with Raid, spray him with Ntrl Care and comb twice a day. EVERY time I find 5-10 fleas, many alive. I also bought CapStar, flea collar, carpet powder. Anything I miss?

It sounds like you are doing everything right so far. Fleas can be very hard to kill in the home, and I recommend calling an exterminator to flea bomb your house. That will be the best way to kill all the ones in your home. I hope this helps!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is a very frustrating situation. I would try oral flea/tick prevention. I would also recommend calling an exterminator. Fleas can be extremely difficult to get rid of in certain situations. It can take a full 3 months to completely get rid of them. I hope you get rid of them soon and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Hi, I know you must be frustrated. Don't worry, we will kill the fleas. The best option for your pet is Comfortis (Spinosad) which kills and prevents fleas for a month. Remember though you must administer the medication every month in order to prevent reinfestation. In order to completely eliminate the problem, you will need to have your house and yard treated. Also, even if you don't see fleas on your other pets prevention is warranted in order to prevent infestations.

Get a topical once a month treatment that kills adult fleas AND has an ingredient to make eggs unable to hatch. Something like Frontline or Advtantix are great choices. Vacuum carpet and furniture the dog gets into once daily and wash bedding in hot water. Check out the article below for info and tips on why fleas can be so pesky to get rid of.... and most importantly get them on year round once a month topical treatment with a growth inhibitor to prevent flea eggs from hatching. Thank you for trying to take such good care of Princess. Fleas can be hard to get rid of. 1) Make sure you're using a good product. I recommend Frontline or Advantix. There are cheaper options at most pet stores, but they don't always work. Make sure you use them at least 3 days AFTER or BEFORE a bath. Stop the shampoos since they won't help more than the topical treatment. 2) Vacuum your house as frequently as possible - carpets, couches, anything with fabric. Aim for 2-3 times per week. Empty out the canister or bag in a trash can outside after every vacuum. 3) Check with a local pet store for a product to kill fleas on the furniture. 4) It's ok to put a small amount neosporin on any wounds Princess has some scratching. It won't work as well as oral antibiotics from the vet, but may help a bit. 5) Make sure every pet in your house is treated for fleas (dogs and cats). 6) Sometimes a professional exterminator is needed for the fleas and sometimes a vet visit is needed to stop the itc

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. Fleas are the worst! I will give you the flea treatment program that has always worked for me. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment because fleas live in the environment, not on the dog. They jump on to feed, and then jump off. Wash the dog bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. You may need to call in an exterminator to bomb the house. That would be the best way to kill all the fleas in your home. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries about the fleas, but it is illegal to prescribe any medications without first doing an in-person physical examination on your pet. So, you will need to see your regular vet about this. There are, however, several things you can still do at home to combat the fleas. One is to add either Capstar, an oral tablet that you can give once a day, week or as often as necessary to kill fleas. The other is to try a Seresto collar. These really work very well & both my options can be used with the Frontline. You also need to treat your home with sprays or bombs that contain an insect growth regulator, & treat your yard as well. There are many very good products out there to combat fleas. It is not often a one time treatment as it can take up to 3 months to eliminate all the living generations of fleas in your vicinity. I'm not sure what flea treatments you have used, so I apologize if I give you ones that you have previously tried. I personally like Revolution and Advantage, so I would use one of them. You can get them from your vet. You can also give Baby Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and is safe to give with the spot on treatments (Revolution and Advantage). Keep in mind that you need to treat the environment as well, as fleas live in the environment, not on the dog. They only jump on the dog to feed, and then jump off. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I hope this helps!

If topical or oral treatments have not been successful, discuss options with your veterinarian. He or she may stock different products. Choose one and use it for at least 3 consecutive months. Once the dog is treated, treat the environment. It takes this long to disrupt the flea life cycle. A majority of the flea population lives off of the pet. They only jump on to take a meal then jump off. You should vacuum everywhere and dispose of the bag or empty the canister outdoors immediately after. Wash all bedding in the hottest water allowable by fabric and dry in the dryer. Use an area treatment, such as Indorex or Knockout ES, to prevent reinfestation. In sensitive dogs, just one flea bite can set off an allergic reaction. Discuss antihistamine use with your veterinarian. Trixie may need a short acting steroid to provide relief. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent excessive licking or chewing.

Capstar will only kill those fleas that are on the dog and sucking blood once. Getting rid of fleas is relatively easy but entails work for a few months: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly )Bravecto/Nexgard/Seresto will last longer) 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. There are three things you need to do to combat fleas: 1. Treat ALL animals in the house with flea prevention monthly. Even cats and even if they don't go outside. Baths, sprays and collars (with the exception of the Seresto collar) are only temporary fixes. You need to use a prescription strength oral or topical prevention that you get from your vet. You can also get these products at your local Petco when they have their weekend VETCO clinics (a vet will be on site). Here is a link to their site and locations in your area.
