My cat on Tapazole has skin sores and hair loss. Is it a side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My cat started taking tapazole a week ago for hyperthyroidism and I found one large sore and three smaller sores above his eye, along with hair loss. I didn't give him his dose yet tonight. He is on the transdermal pen. Should I stop and speak to my vet tomorrow or continue the meds because this is unrelated? Thank you.

I would skip this dose and be sure to speak to the vet first thing tomorrow. Facial dermatitis can be a side effect with tapazole. Please contact your vet tomorrow to discuss the next steps for Micheal’s treatment.

Skin sores are uncommon side effects of methamizole treatment is cats. However, if the sores are in the area where you normally apply the medication you should not give Michael his evening dose and talk to your vet in the morning. Michaeal may have an allergic reaction to one of the ingreedients and your vet may have to change his medication to a different brand.
