Why does my dog keep getting a filled pore on his hindquarters?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 22 lbs

My almost 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has what the vet called a "filled pore" on his hind quarters about 3 inches above the base of his tail. The vet squeezed it out and said it may fill back up again. Well, it did fill back up and got bigger (about 0.5 inch in diameter) over several months time. About a month ago I used a needle to open it and squeezed out off-white mealy, grainy, cheesy looking stuff. It's starting to fill up again. Not bothered by it Advice?

Without a biopsy it is impossible to say for sure, but what you describe sounds like a sebaceous or oil gland cyst. The more you mess with it the more likely it is to become infected and problematic. I usually recommend to leave them alone unless they are bothering the dog. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Pet Coach.
