My Maltese has heart and lung issues, why strange breathing & weight loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 14 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

My Maltese has a bad mitral valve and a lung mass. She is on pimobend , sildenifil and occasional codiene. She is having episodes of strange breathing, almost like hiccups, but deeper. It seems heart related. She has lost weight, too.

Poor Bauer. Episodes of strange breathing are likely, in her case, to be due to her ongoing problems. Weight loss is also a concern as dogs with tumors often lose weight while the tumor continues to grow. I would recommend you to see your vet and discuss if there are any medications that could give Bauer some relief. She may benefit from administration of pain killers as lung mass can cause discomfort and potentialy abnormal respiration in your dog.
