Is my Labrador's pancreatitis actually cancer if tests are unclear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old

My 9 year old Labrador is being treated for acute pancreatitis. He's showing most symptoms and vet has ran tests that show the enzymes are high (2500). He doesn't have a temperature and had very bloody vomit 2 days ago just before him being hospitalised. Is this likely acute pancreatitis or cancer? My vet has done an ultrasound and couldn't see anything and he is too poorly for anaesthetic to do other tests

Unfortunately both pancreatitis and cancer can be difficult to diagnose. Ultrasound with an experienced ultrasonographer is often the best way to diagnose pancreatitis, but sometimes the pancreas can look relatively normal or difficult to see during an ultrasound. A tumor in the stomach or the pancreas can be be very difficult to see as well. You may want to ask your veterinarian about referral to a radiologist or internal medicine specialist for an ultrasound if Sirius is not responding well to current treatments.
