My old dog has a red, puss-filled lump under her chin. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

My dog (Black Lab) 13 tears old has a 2 inch circular hard lump under her chin. Some of it is reddish (2 spots) and there is a little puss on the red spots. That part of her chin was hard for a long time but the lump is new. Behavior is normal. No problem eating. What do you think it is/how to treat it? Thanks.

Hi and thanks for your post this afternoon! It is hard to say what exactly the lump could be without examining Brandy first and taking a sample of the lump. This should be done at your local veterinarian's office to determine if it is something of concern or not and if it needs to be surgically removed. The mass could have become infected as well which may explain the puss. She may also need antibiotics by your veterinarian. It is good to hear her behavior is normal and Brandy has not had trouble eating, but I would still have a sample taken of the lump just to be sure. I hope this helps and I wish you and Brandy the best!
