My dog still limps after a month of rest. What should I try next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 8 years and 11 months old | 40 lbs

My dog pulled a muscle in his right back leg and I was wondering what kind of treatment I can give him because my vet said that all he needed was rest but it's been over a month and he still walks with a limp. He struggles getting up, walking, and jumping. How can I help him? Btw my dog is a male American cocker spaniel and he is 8 years old. He also has Lyme disease.

I would recommend a repeat examination. ACL injuries are really common but can be hard to diagnose early on. Sometimes repeat examination is the only way to find it. They might recommend an X-ray too. Other things like bone infection or immune arthritis secondary to Lyme disease may be part of the problem. I would encourage you to take him back to your veterinarian to reassess the problem. Good luck to you and Lucas!
