Why does my puppy pull her pee pad and run with it? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 29 days old | 10.6 lbs

My puppy is beginning to pull her pee pee pad off the tray and run around with it. She did this before when she was younger but she stopped it. Recently her routine has changed because I've gone back to school and my mom went back to work & she does have separation anxiety but we make sure she is never alone. I make sure she has a lot of attention when I am home. I thought it might be boredom so made her run around and play all day yesterday she pulls even when I'm with her. What else can I do

Snowball certainly sounds bored and like she has plenty of energy to burn! She is clearly trying to play by pulling her pad out and running off with it. I suggest getting rid of the pads entirely and making sure she is house-trained completely. Keeping a specific schedule for her feeding and walks really helps with this, and reward her when she goes outside. She is old enough now at 7 months that she shouldn't be having any accidents in the house or in her crate if you are taking her for walks frequently enough. Check out this great veterinary dog behavior and training website if you need more help with house training or getting all that extra energy out of her: www.dogstardaily.com. This is a fantastic resource for training, puppy behavior, and socialization. Good luck!
