My dog has facial swelling and hives. Could it be an allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 months and 20 days old | 75 lbs

My dog has sweeping around the muzzle and eyes with hives around the chest area. The swelling around the eyes have gotten worse. Have given my dog 3 doses of benedryl. What is causing this in my dog?

It's probably an allergic reaction to either an insect, something in the environment or something he ingested. if it seems to just be getting worse you need to take him to the vet right now in order to get a steroid injection.

Poor Maggie! Yes! You are probably exactly right that she was bitten by something. AND she is a boxer. In my experience boxers tend to be very reactive to allergic reactions like this. Please take her to a veterinarian immediately for a steroid injection and likely Benadryl injection too. In most cases this is enough, but with my boxer patients I usually send home steroids for 3-4 days or they tend to flare up again. Especially with the long weekend ahead of us. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon!!! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
