My cat is sleeping after vomiting shot, not eating. Side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat was vomiting today. He would meow in distress before doing so and when he vomited it wasn't a large amount and it had a foul odor. He did this 4 times before I took him to the vet. The vet gave him a shot to control vomiting for next 24 hours. He got the shot at 1-2 pm and it is not about 10 hours later. My cat has been sleeping the entire time and hasn't eaten or drank anything. I don't know what the medicine in the shot was called. Is this normal side effects from shot?

I am guessing the injection given was Cerenia. Side effects are uncommon with the use of this medication, but the most commonly noted side effects were: drooling, drowsiness, diarrhea, and appetite loss. I would be worried and I think he needs to get back to the vet. Were any x-rays or blood testing done? If not, that needs to be done to figure out what is going on. This sounds like it could be something more serious going on. If it was just a simple upset stomach he should be feeling MUCH better after that injection and not sleeping for 10 hours. I would be worried.
