How to calm my Pomeranians when they bark and get scared in the car?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

My family recently switched to driving a car instead of our standard truck. While in the car, my two Pomeranians freaked out even though they've been in a vehicle dozens of times. I understand their uncertainty with being in the car will likely go away eventually, but how do I calm them down when they're whiny and barking? Especially when my Dad leaves the inside of the car or when someone cleans the window shield at the gas station (they get especially scared).

It might be a good idea to slowly transition them. Maybe drive them around the block once or twice a day, and then gradually increase the amount of time they spend in the car. Consider not doing "events" like car wash or gas station until they are more comfortable. I hope they adjust quickly!
