Will a 7-day renal diet lower my cat's kidney SDMA levels, or longer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 8 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hello could eating a renal kidney diet for only 7 days lower SDMA levels in a cat or would he need to eat it for a longer period of time to see lowering kidney lab values? Thank u!

Hi and thank you for posting! The SDMA levels may decrease with renal disease medications, treatments, and a renal friendly diet, but I would not anticipate a dramatic decrease especially in the face of chronic kidney disease and especially after only 7 days of a new diet. It may take a few weeks or more to see a decrease. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
