Why is my Shih Tzu puppy's vulva swollen again after her heat?

I have a 6month old female shih- tzu she had her cycle mid August 2017...now it's the end of Sept 2017 and her private part is swollen again,should I be concerned? ?

Yes I would be concerned in that a dog's heat occurs every six months, not a month apart. It could be that Bella has an infection causing the swelling of her vulva but it could also be that she is pregnant especially if she was around intact males when she was in heat. I would have her seen by a vet for this. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling of her vulva. I hope this helps!

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. The average heat cycle lasts about 4 weeks, however there is some variation. Typically dogs do not have bloody discharge for more than a week or so during this process. The vulva does remain swollen during this time, and after their first heat cycle it will remain more "mature" in appearance than it was prior. If you plan to spay her I would recommend waiting about 1 month after to allow the internal blood supply to regress back down to more normal size. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. It is possible that Harley could be going through something called 'pseudo-pregnancy'. Dogs can develop mammary glands, produce milk, and will sometimes even start to nest and collect small stuffed animals to nurse. This is normal and will subside in a few weeks. However, it is recommended to get her spayed before her next heat so she doesn't have to go through that stress again. The other possible cause is something called a pyometra. This is an infected uterus and is life-threatening. If you notice any discharge from her vulva, if she is weak, not eating, drinking more, or acting abnormally at all, I would have her seen by your vet right away. Best of luck with Harley.

You are honestly too kind to me! Bloat is fatal without treatment, but if she is acting normally now, then she doesn't have it. You would see unproductive vomiting, restlessness, pacing, a swollen abdomen, and looking at the abdomen. It's good that she stopped the previous behavior, and it could be that she had something stuck in her throat but has now passed it. I would monitor her for now, and if she does show any concerning signs again, have her seen by a vet. As for the swelling of her stomach, it could be possible that Bella is pregnant if she's been around intact male dogs. She could have be going into heat, as the mammary glands can swell when a dog is in heat.

To me the vulva does not seem swollen, it seem normal, but of course it may be more swollen that it usually is. in such a case it could be due to a slight infection, either in the urinary tract or vagina. for now i would recommend just monitoring it, if it gets worse then you should take her to the vet to get it checked.

Yes, the vulva is normally swollen during the heat cycle. The swelling will go away when then heat cycle is over. Be aware that your dog will be able to conceive up to three weeks from the day she stops bleeding as she now is in heat. The time she was bleeding was preparing for the heat (pre-estrus). The best time to spay is about three months from the day she stops bleeding.

Your vet or vet tech can check and help advise you further; monitor for any fever and keep her away from all non-neutered males in the meantime

Hello. Bella needs to see a veterinarian to make sure this is not an open pyometra. An open pyometra is an infection in the uterus, but because the cervix is open, the discharge can flow out & a pet does not seem to be overly ill. But, if the cervix closes & the material builds up in her uterus, this can make her extremely sick & possibly endanger her life. Do not use Preparation H on her. Keep the e-collar in place and keep the area clean and dry. It looks like she is in heat. If she has been spayed already or if the swelling doesn't begin to subside on a few days then have her physically examined by your veterinarian. If she is intact, wait a few weeks after her heat has ended and consider having her spayed to prevent accidental or unwanted litters.

It is the skin around the vulva that is irritated and swollen, not the vulva itself. The vulva will swell when they are going into heat. This is a skin infection. I suggest you have her to your vet for an exam.

If she has issues or abnormalities that you are seeing with her vulva, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine if there is a possible issue going on. If there is a prolapsed uterus, spaying her may be a necessary treatment. I would have her evaluated, see if there is an issue that needs to be addressed and any further treatment determined from there. Good luck!
