My senior dog is in pain and can't stand. Can I give her Tylenol?

My 18 yr old chiuhauha has been waking up crying in pain and not able to stand on one of her legs.This started about a month ago.Do you think it's a sudden onset of osteoarthritis?and can I give her children's Tylenol?

Please do not give Asia Tylenol! This can and does cause acetaminophen toxicity, and is not safe to give to her. It could be that she has arthritis, but she could have also strained or torn a muscle or ligament. She could have also broken a bone. It's quite serious this has been going on for a month and she needs veterinary care as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain and how best to treat it. Please take her into a vet.

I would not recommend giving Sierra acetaminophen - it's true that this medication is occasionally used for certain problems in dogs, but it has the potential to cause serious toxicity issues. It is off-label use and can only be given by prescription from a veterinarian. It's also not safe to use in dogs with any kind of liver or kidney issues, so blood work would always be recommended in an older dog prior to giving any kind of drug like this. If Sierra is crying, I would really recommend taking her to a vet today if at all possible to find out what's wrong - treatment recommendations will depend on what the underlying problem is, and I'm afraid that there are no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe for use in dogs. Your vet can do a thorough exam as well as blood work or x-rays if needed to help determine what's wrong and prescribe appropriate medication to treat the problem depending on what is found.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Arthritis can happen in older dogs as you know. However, this is not the only condition that can cause lameness like that. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! Please do not give Luna any paracetamol. It contains acetaminophen which has a very narrow margin of safety and can be toxic to dogs. Unfortunately many human pain relievers are toxic to dogs, and it's not recommended to give to them. Getting her into the vet tomorrow is the best idea, and I would rest her until then. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is having trouble standing up, help her when she gets up. Good luck!

No, Tylenol is never safe to give to dogs. It contains acetaminophen which is toxic to dogs. Please do not give this to Deuce. I would have him seen by a vet if he's limping. The vet can diagnose what is causing the pain and limping, and can prescribe safe pain medication for him. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that Tess seems so uncomfortable today. I wouldn't recommend giving the puppy's medication to her. Sometimes older dogs have underlying kidney or liver disease. If Tess has some mild organ dysfunction due to her age the anti-inflammatory medication could make it worse. The other reason would be if your veterinarian finds something different from arthritis on her examination tomorrow. Some other conditions such as back pain can be treated with medications that cannot be given at the same time as anti-inflammatory drugs. Keep her quiet today and help her if she needs assistance. Please do not give him aspirin! It is not recommended to give it to dogs, as it causes internal bleeding and GI ulcers, and you should stop giving it to him now to prevent this from happening. The only safe pain medications for dogs are available by prescription from the vet. You will have to take him into the vet in order to get these medications. Hi. I am so sorry to hear this! I wish there was a safe over the counter pain medication for pets, but there isn't. Human over the counter meds can be toxic to pets so those aren't an option. If he is having trouble resting, you can give him 25mg benadryl ( 1 adult tab). It will not help pain, but may help him rest till tomorrow. If you have a near by ER, I would recommend that.

No, I would not give these pain medications to Dexter. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Paracetamol is toxic to dogs in large enough doses. I recommend resting Dexter until he sees the vet on Monday. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done.

Unfortunately, your choices of OTC medications for pain are limited as most can be toxic or have a very narrow margin of safety. Ideally, you should have your dog examined by your veterinarian. A medication, such as Metacam (meloxicam) or Rimadyl (carprofen), may be dispensed if indicated. For now, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Alternating warm and cool compresses may also relieve discomfort. Other alternative treatments include acupuncture or cold laser therapy.

I'm sorry that Moo-moo is hurt! Unfortunately, both ibuprofen and Tylenol are toxic to dogs, so you cannot give her either of these medications. There are no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe for dogs, so I'm afraid that you will need to take her to the vet for an exam - he/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for her if needed.
