My Yorkie has eye discharge and rubs his eyes. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Hi I have a small yorkie about 8lbs, recently last weekend a had babysitter a dogs friend of mine a beagle, she had told me her dog had minor pink eye and was recovering from it so he shouldn’t be contagious I took her for her word , now a two or 3 days later my dog has started having a mucus like discharge coming from both eyes and occasionally he will lick and rub his eyes from time to time. At the moment it seems minor . But I’m not entirely sure on what action I should take.

It sounds like Hercules could have a mild conjunctivitis. Unless he had direct contact with the other dog it's unlikely he caught it from him. Allergies are a common cause as well. If the discharge is clear it could be normal for his breed as Yorkies can commonly have epiphora (tearing). However, if he's rubbing at his eyes, the discharge is yellow or green, or the whites of his eyes are red, it could be an infection and he should see a vet. He may need eye drops in order for it to clear up. Good luck!
