My dog was bitten. How to clean a dog bite and prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My dog got bit by another dog and has one tooth bite mark and i read to clean it with saline solution so I did and he's not acting like it hurts or anything just probably a little sore now. Should I keep cleaning it with the saline solution like it says online or just take him in. I don't want it to get infected or anything but I don't want to take him if I don't need to

I would clean it with either Betadine or Chlorhexidine solution (diluted 1:10 with water). Try to flush the solution down into the hole. I would do that twice daily, dry it thoroughly after cleaning and then you can apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment like Neosporin. Saline is not necessarily bad but it has no antibacterial properties. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Betadine-First-Aid-Skin-Cleanser-4-fluid-ounces/878733067 https://www.walmart.com/ip/CHLORHEXIDINE-2-SOLUTION/26961493 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Triple-Antibiotic-Ointment-1-oz/10324544 If you notice increased discharge, redness, pain or swelling then you can be sure it is getting infected and then he needs to see your vet to get some oral antibiotics and some anti-inflammatories. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
