What can I put on my dog's allergy sores from scratching to heal them?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Meco! I would check him closely for fleas as the hind end is a common spot for fleas. I like the Seresto collar, Nexgard, Advantix, Simparica and Bravecto for fleas. You can bath him in a medicated shampoo (see link) and try an antihistamine to help the scratching until your Vet appointment. If you find fleas treat them will help immensely. Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides. Allerderm Spot-on by Virbac & Dermoscent Essential 6 Spot-on are 2 highly rated products. Ueing these products along with diet & appropriate medications should make Mumble much more comfortable. Hello. Petco carries a number of products that might help. Zymox makes a spray & a salve that contains hydrocortisone, that can really help with the itching. On-line, you can find many more products such as shampoos & conditioners that also contain hydrocortisone. Topicals only work for short periods of time. Longer relief can be obtained with immunostimulants such as Apoquel & Cytopoint, both available from your veterinarian. Your pet may also have additional issues such as skin mites, fleas, bacterial & yeast infections in the skin, & your veterinarian can certainly help to sort some of these issues out. I recommend giving her a cleansing bath in cool water with a hypoallergenic shampoo. Then put a cone on her so she can't continue to scratch her face. Apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the sores. You can give Benadryl to calm the itch. There is a section on this website with information about common over the counter medications with dosages. If these sores are not improving she should have her skin and ears checked for parasites since she could have ear mites, or mange that can cause this much scratching. She would probably heal these sores more quickly with a course of antibiotics also. If it's an allergy they may recommend anti inflammatory medication also. He could definitely have seasonal allergies and you could talk to your vet about using an anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or a new allergy medication called Apoquel. If he has a secondary bacterial skin infection then he will also need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Hydrocortizone can help with itchy spots but when the problem is generalized it is not likely to help much, on the other hand it won't make it worse either. Scratching can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea her with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take her to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

Yes it looks like a hot spot. You can try this hot spot spray medication. If that does not help after about 5 days then he should go back to the vet. Good idea with the E-collar. It looks like it could be a contact allergy of some kind. You can try the following: 1. This topical steroid/antibiotic spray.
