My cat licked chocolate and vomited. Should I take him to the vet?

Poor Olaf! The taste of the chocolate muffin may have made him feel ill, but if he didn't actually eat any of the muffin, he would not suffer any toxicity from it. I will give you a home remedy to see if that helps him feel better. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. There is the potential that it could be a problem depending on how much chocolate was in the pudding and how much Bear ingested. Typically pudding does not contain a lot of chocolate, so if he only licked the sides, he should be fine. You may see some GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, so if you do see that, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Great question! Dark chocolate is unfortunately the most toxic type of chocolate, meaning it takes the smallest amount of it to cause toxic symptoms. Without knowing exactly how much of the cake was made up of dark chocolate, it can't say if Wolf will be ok or not. Because chocolate toxicity can cause death if enough is ingested, my recommendation is to take him into a vet now. The vet can induce vomiting with a shot, and can do decontamination procedures to prevent any toxicity from occurring. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It is unlikely that she ate enough chocolate to cause serious problems but since she vomited I would have her seen by your vet to ensure she doesn't need any meds. You could also call the pet poison helpline to get more information. Keep a close eye on her. Feed her plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to help settle her tummy. Maple syrup isn't toxic to cats, but the sugar could upset Mirz's stomach. The butter could have caused the vomiting as well since cats are lactose intolerant. The good news is that milk chocolate is the least toxic type of chocolate, and if it was a small piece with caramel inside, there likely isn't a lot of chocolate in it and your cat should be fine. I recommend monitor her for now, and if you do see some signs of chocolate toxicity such as vomiting, lethargy, or anorexia, I would have her seen by a vet. It's likely, however, she will be just fine :-)

Hi there! A few crumbs of milk chocolate probably will not harm your cat. If she got a decent bit, she might have some diarrhea, but I highly doubt this will happen if it was only chocolate residue. Feel free to call your vet if you have concerns, but I think your kitty will be just fine! :)

Oh dear, poor Brandy! It is possible that she is experiencing some gastroenteritis from even a small amount of cookie dough. You can try to withhold food for the next 12-24 hours, then offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken for a few days. Once the vomiting subsides, gradually mix her normal food with the bland diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Brandy continues to vomit, develops diarrhea, lethargy, or refuses to eat the bland diet, she will need to go to her vet. She may need IV fluids and medications to help slow her vomiting. I hope that she feels better soon!
