Tiny black bugs on dog's thigh after flea shampoo. Are they fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 14 lbs

Hey I found some tiny black bugs on my dogs inner thigh could those possibly be fleas? The picture attached is what was left on those bugs when my pet was towel dried after a bath with flea and tick shampoo. No one in my home has been bitten or suffering from severe scratching but I’m still very concerned

Yes, unfortunately that looks like fleas. Usually flea and tick shampoos do not do a good job of eradicating a flea issue because they only kill the adult fleas on the dog but don't do anything for the larvae and eggs that represent the main problem. I'd suggest getting a quality flea preventative for Star like Bravecto, Advantix, Vectra, or Nexguard. These are all prescription flea meds so you will need to get them from your veterinarian. The flea preventative needs to be used for at least 4 months to fully get rid of the issue. All pets in the household should use a flea preventative during this time period. I'm hopeful that you are catching the problem early before it becomes a bigger issue. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and good luck!
