How much protein does an inactive dog really need in their food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

I heard that your dog should get one gram of protein per pound of body weight. I did the math and the food that she's on now (20% protein) she would get about 12-13 grams and she weighs 17 pounds. Is this ok? There is another food called Merrick that if I fed her that she would get about 16 grams of protein. (it's 25% protein) Would that be a better option? Why or why not? (She's not an active dog.)

Hello, increased protein will likely not be of much benefit for Chloe if she is not very active. Either of those foods, provided they meet the AAFCO requirements for a maintenance life stage will be sufficient for Chloe. A higher protein food would likely benefit a working dog the most. Hope this helps
