Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs
Pitbull 8mo (~50lbs). Is this vulva swelling normal during heat? (see pics) Is it infected? Is this normal for med/lrg breeds? Should I rush to see a vet? Her vulva seems abnormally large (swollen) about 3-4x larger, but she already had a relatively larger vulva than most dogs. Overall healthy and seems normal. Energy good, eating normal, stool firm/soft. Never had a female before and want to make sure she's ok.

Yes, swelling of the vulva is normal during a heat, and it can get large especially if Poke already has a relatively large vulva. It can also be caused by an allergic reaction or an infection. It's always good to have it checked out by a vet just to be safe. I hope this helps!

The vulva will definitely enlarge when a dog is in heat. However, this swelling extends too far upwards towards the tail, which is not something typically seen with a heat cycle. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps!

Thank you for the picture, it is very helpful. That does not appear normal. Usually in a heat, we would expect to see the vulva itself swollen, which is the outer structures. In your pictures, it appears there is a structure from the inside that is protruding outward. This could be a vaginal prolapse, which can happen during a heat. Unfortunately I cannot say this for sure without seeing Chanel in person, so yes I definitely would take her into the vet to get this checked out. I would put a cone on her to keep her from licking this, and keep the area clean. I hope this helps!

I agree that her swelling is very dramatic, but it is not necessary abnormal. If you have any concern that she is uncomfortable or not feeling well then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Otherwise give her a few weeks to get through her cycle. It will never return to a immature size, but once the hormones subside then the swelling will too. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
