Why is my dog's stool red and jelly-like, and anal glands leaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 30 lbs

My dog, Cham, is 1yr 6 months. Cocker spaniel poodle mix. Yesterday when I got home from work he had red jelly like stool. I cleaned his anal gland and more fluid came out than I’ve ever seen before. Since then I have fed him rice and chicken with a little bit of pumpkin. His stools look a little darker which is good but he still has some stool that is just jelly red. No vomiting. He hasn’t lost his appetite and is still drinking normally. Normal behavior as well. please help.

If the blood and mucous is coming from his anal gland, he may have an infected anal gland. If that is the case, he may need an infusion or oral antibiotics to resolve it. I have attached a link with more information about anal glands below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=625 If the blood and mucous is coming from his stool, then he may have colitis. I have attached information about colitis below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=677 Either way, both are abnormal, so I would recommend having your vet examine him and help you decide on a treatment plan. I hope that was helpful! Thanks for using PetCoach.
