What is the safest age to breed my female Boxer dog for health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 50 lbs

Hello. I wanted to ask when we can breed our Boxer? She had her first heat in July so her second one should be in January and she would be 1yr and 4 months old. Can we breed her during her 2nd heat or should we wait until she is 2 years old?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would wait until she is at least 2 years old to breed. Breeding on the 1st and 2nd heat is a little too early. It would be like a teenager having a baby which is too young! You are better off waiting. She will be at a lower risk of complications during pregnancy if you wait. Best to you and Leila!
