Could citronella be making my macaw sick with balance issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 25 years and 8 months old | 2 lbs

My military macaw is not well. Been prescribed trimethoprim, somewhat better, eating well, poop looks normal, but shivering chest, some overgrooming but not plucking, makes a gutteral sound, holds one foot up, seems like her equalibrium is off balance, sitting with wings slightly apart, first diagnosis is allergy, only thing I added was citronella on me to fight mosquitoes, could that be toxic? she's 25, two years ago, bacteria infection in digestive tract, what could be wrong?

Citronella oil itself is considered non toxic or of very low toxicity to birds. In a lotion or spray though, the combination of ingredients and chemicals may pose risk of toxicity or respiratory irritation. Allow another a day or two for the trimethoprim to take effect. If symptoms persist or worsen, have Josie rechecked by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.
