Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 70 lbs
My German Shepard has a large growth all the sudden in their neck area. It almost wraps around to under her ear. Her neck seems to be more liquid whereas the lump under the ear is harder. Her demeanor hasn't changed. I'm not sure what it is or if it is an emergency situation.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many reasons for a growth to show up rather suddenly. This could be an abscess from a bite or puncture wound, an infected salivary gland, an infected tooth, or an enlarged lymph node either from an infection, or something more serious like lymphoma. We do see benign, fatty tumors ( lipomas ) in this region, but she is pretty young for this to occur. I would have this evaluated as soon as possible. Hopefully it will not turn out to be too serious, but Athena should be looked at soon. I hope all is well soon. Take care.

Since this came up quickly this is most likely an infection or fluid accumulation from an injury. Tumors usually don't come up suddenly and they usually are firm and do not feel like liquid. Yes, I would bring her to your veterinarian soon so they can examine the lump. They will put a needle into it and look at the cells and fluid under a microscope to determine the cause. If it's an infection or a blood filled pocket from an injury they will probably drain the area and put Athena on antibiotics and pain medication. If is a growth they can send a sample out for a biopsy. As she is young with the appropriate treatment I expect a quick recovery. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Athena.
