My cat has leg sores. Is it from dirty clay litter or allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | 8 lbs

My friends cat has crusty sores on the backs of her legs from button to the first joint. He is using clay litter and doesn't clean it and change it often. Could she be alergic to the clay or retina to the abundance of urine soaked litter?

The urine or dirty litter getting stuck on her could both be the cause of the wounds. I would recommend to change the litter more often and maybe even putting an additional litter box down to help. I would have your vet look at the sores to ensure she doesn't need any antibiotics. I hope this helps.
