Why does my senior dog have scabs on her head, but isn't bothered?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chow Chow | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old | 41 lbs

My 8yr old Chow has developed a few random scabs on her head. They aren't anywhere else on her and she doesn't seem bothered by them at all. Any thoughts on what this could be? She hasn't been out of our yard, to the groomers, or with other dogs in the last several weeks.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Without pictures it is difficult to say what the scabs are. I would suspect either trauma, insect bites or sores from a skin reaction. I would monitor these for now, especially if they do not seem to be bothering Zuni. Monitor for changes in size, appearance and how many there are. If you notice they are not resolving or are worsening I would have Zuni examined by a veterinarian so that further diagnostics and treatment can be performed. I would recommend a wound cream such as Zymox topical ointment (can be found online) and apply as directed on the tube of ointment. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions. I am also available via consultation if needed.
