My cat's litter box smells terrible after new food. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 9.3 lbs

Hello! My cat had a gastrointestinal problem 9 months ago, our vet prescribed treatment + diet, I followed all the instructions and now my cat looks healthy and happy. The doctor recommended switching from ProPlan to super premium grain-free cat food, so I chose Monge B-Wild. After that nothing has changed, except the smell of his litterbox - it's so strong it's almost unbearable, ugh! It didn't use to be like this. Should I be worried or should we just try another brand of cat food? Thank you!

Hi there. So glad Tisha is doing better! I would not be worried about the smell. I don't think it is harmful but understand it can be unpleasant for you! I recommend you get her a probiotic and feed that along with the diet for a couple of weeks. I am not sure what brands of probiotics you have available there but you need to find one that is made for cats (not humans) and definitely do not give her any dairy (like yogurt). If no change in the smell after trying the probiotics and it is really that unpleasant for you then I would suggest you change diets at that time. Hope this helps.
