Why is my old dog suddenly blind, gaining weight, and confused?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 12 years and 8 months old

12 year old male Chihuahua- Had an infection before having 21 teeth removed. Sudden weight gain - 4 lbs in 1 month, sudden blindness, hearing loss, confusion and disorientation. Just discovered 2 soft lumps on the front of his chest yesterday - not sure if this is just fatty tissue. Has been checked for diabetes (his level is at 5.7), and hypothyroidism - both negative. Could it be Cushings disease? His eyes are cloudy but not all the time and he can hear sometimes but not always

There is a condition called SARDS or sudden acute retinal degeneration syndrome. We don't know what causes this syndrome in dogs, but it does cause sudden blindness, weight gain, and increased water intake. Your veterinarian may be able to help identify if they agree with this possibility. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for using Pet Coach.
