My dog has an upper respiratory infection. Can Bordetella cure it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 8 years old | 41 lbs

I adopted a dog a week ago today from my local shelter. She has some symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, but she went to the vet on Saturday for her Bordetella re-vacc. Shouldn't the bordetellea vaccine kill a URI if she has one? Just looking for some clarification before I take her into the vet again this week.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The bordatella vaccine is a vaccine to prevent a bacteria that can cause kennel cough. It is not a treatment for kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection. Upper respiratory infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria. She may need an antibiotic. I hope this helps! Good luck!
