Why is my dog licking his paws, hair thinning, should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old

My dog licks the knuckles on all of his paws and now the hair seems to be thinning out. He doesnt lick the all the time and they aren't red. The skin looks a little dry. There are no scabs. Just curious if this could be something serious?

This is a sign of an allergy, most likely to grass, mulch or weeds he walks on. This is not serious unless Bullet starts making sores on his paws or if they get red and painful. Most dogs respond to periodically washing the feet with a hypoallergenic shampoo, using antihistamines and spending less time in the grass. When you come inside from a walk you can take a damp washcloth and wipe down his paws which may help also. If the condition worsens your veterinarian can prescribe medication to reduce the licking.
