Why is my older dog limping and has new lumps above her hips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female

My older dog has had hip/leg problems for a long time. It acts up or she hurts it sometimes and is limping right now. Ive noticed since losing her pregnancy weight she has two lumps that look like hipbones located on both sides above her actual hipbones. Im very very poor and cant afford medical help. Do you know what this could be? And how worried should I be? Please help and thank you for your heart.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Genesis it's hard to say. If the lumps are symmetric and soft, it is likely fatty subcutaneous tissue. Like "love handles" in people. Again, without seeing her I can't say that for sure but this is a common area where fat is stored on dogs and owners commonly are worried about it. The best diagnosis is having a vet stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope. I hope this helps! Kisses to Genesis!
