My dog has a suspected tumor, doing well on steroids. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old

Cancer?very sick suddenly after killing possum and was told X-rays don't look right-they show something pushing on intestines but can't see a tumor on xray/saw a concerning spot on ultrasound.Believes fight with possum has caused, what is assumed to be a tumor,to bleed creating the sickness, anemia suddenly. Now on steroids and doing well-good appetite, good energy, doesn't seem to be in pain. Should I seek 2nd opinion/specialist?Could it be anything else? Should she have any other meds?

I'm sorry to hear Athena isn't feeling well. Without further testing it is hard to say what is going on. Ideally the next step would be an exploratory surgery to see inside her abdomen and send a sample of the possible mass to a pathologist. There are some tumors that are malignant (cancerous) and some can be benign (non-cancerous). Steroids can be a good medication to decrease inflammation and help red blood cells regenerate. If she's doing well, I would continue with the treatment prescribed. If you want more information about what the problem could be, I would seek medical advice from a specialist- your vet would need to refer you to one. I hope this helps! Good luck and kisses to Athena!
