My senior dog has maggots. Can I treat them at home safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 11 years and 3 months old | 190 lbs

I have a 13 year old Alaskan Malamute lab mix he is currently been diagnosed with possibly having testicular cancer and the last couple days he seems like he has been dripping feces it's in the form of liquid but this morning we found a massive form of maggots on his back could smell and it's leaking of what we thought was feces could actually be from the maggots eating his skin and is there a treatment that we can do for him at home to try to get rid of the maggots there is thousands of them

Hi. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Shadow really needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. If there are maggots then there is a significant wound/lesion that needs attention. He may need to have it surgically debrided and likely needs pain medication and antibiotics. Some flea control products such as Capstar can help to kill maggots but the wound still needs to be thoroughly flushed and cleaned. In the case of maggots around the back end sometimes they can be in the rectum which can lead to sepsis or severe complications. Please get Shadow to a veterinarian today. He will also need to be kept indoors until the wound is completely healed or this may happen again.
