My chicken has a broken leg. How do I splint it at home safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi... my chicken got kicked by my horse today and her leg seem to be broken or fractured I can't tell and can't pay for a vet bill to find out. She lips around and in the picture where it's circled I know the fracture/brake is in that area. She puts no weight on it and hops around on one foot. Is it possible to split it? If so how can I do that and with what materials? I live on a farm so I have plenty of things to use to fix it. Please help I would really like to keep my few laying hens alive.

You can try to splint it. This video may help you. The video is good - the only thing I would change is I would use bigger splint stabilizers like a popsicle stick. If there is a wound you need to put some topical antibiotic on the wound before bandaging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxp7JfA3H7w You should keep her isolated from the rest of the birds until healed. Putting her in a crate or very small area would be best. It takes about 2-3 weeks for a bone to heal. Hope this helps. If you have more questions please post again!
